I'm Brian Kirchoff, a St. Louis-based American abstract artist. I don't really begin with a blank canvas. I build something, paint over it, uncover parts of it, alter it, and respond to what remains. Layers of color, texture, line and mark accumulate as the painting evolves.

Two Directions, One Body of Work - 

My work moves between two broad directions.

Suggestion of Place explores my interpretation of landscape, seascape and loosely defined cityscape. These paintings suggest a place without necessarily describing one. A horizon, structure, tree, mountain or other form may emerge, but I leave plenty of room for the viewer to decide what they're seeing.

Abstract Works are less concerned with suggesting a particular place. Here, I work more freely with color, line, shape, texture, movement and tension. The paintings develop through the same process of building, obscuring, revealing and responding, but without the framework of a recognizable environment.

The two directions are different, but they share the same underlying visual vocabulary—and both continue to evolve.
