I've always been attracted to minimalist works.  As a child we would visit the St. Louis Art Museum, and while most kids were interested in the mummies and Egyptian statues, I was drawn to the Abstract or Modern section.  To that point in my life, I'd never considered art being anything other than a pretty picture of trees, or people or dogs or whatever.  But seeing true abstract works for the first time I was hooked.  Simple black lines on a white canvas?  How could that possibly be art?  Colors simply for the sake of colors?  What??  But I remember that moment distinctly, thinking "this is cool".  I adore negative space.  I don't utilize it in all my work but it makes itself known in a good deal of my paintings.

This small piece is an ode to all the abstract artists who've moved me over the decades, specifically Morris Lewis, who's huge piece Alpha Tau (https://www.slam.org/collection/objects/5836/) was the first work I remember seeing there that made a big impression on me.  Franz Kline, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella and many others pushed me towards the artistic path I've chosen.  And honestly, I'm not really sure there truly ever was a choice.

This simple painting is a very small version of what will become a large scale work.  I admire the drama of the stark black on white, the directional flow and the huge portion of negative space that helps define the piece.

This 10" x 8" piece is acrylic on canvas panel. Ships framed as shown with hanging hardware included.
