For no real reason, I ended 2024 with a number of paintings that fall into the landscape category. Of course none are exactly that per se, but my eye and gut apparently took me to these spaces the past couple months. Driving through Kansas and eastern Colorado on a few occasions may have had something to do with it. Flat, desolate, beautiful.
This painting is my abstract interpretation of a meadow. There is a strong sense of texture that I created through the layering paint and the use of different techniques, adding a tactile feel to the work. I splashed, dripped, brushed and rubbed paint on. Even rolled a good amount on with a hard rubber brayer. And of course the good old fashioned finger. At the bottom I wanted to throw a bit of a curve with hard angled brush strokes of color. They make a nice foreground for the application of the meadows' lush growth.
And as with most of my abstract landscape pieces, I allow for multiple interpretations; a vast field of tall grasses or flowers, or as a more representation of growth, energy, or the passage of time. I simply enjoy how it makes me feel. And honestly, that's all I care about. You make up your own mind about my work.
