He said it was an abstract.

The title of this piece comes from an overheard conversation at one of my art shows a couple years back, with one patron saying to another "Well, he said it was an abstract".  It make me chuckle at the time, as it was obvious my work wasn't their cup of tea.

This painting required some thought.  My initial goal was to create some sort of tension with a cloudy application of white over a colorful greens and golds, knowing those colors would be only visible around the edges.  Wet charcoal applied randomly in spots then smeared with fingers and brushes added a bit of an overcast feel that immediately appealed to me.  I lived with this one for a while before deciding to add the red and dark blue.  I refer to pieces such as these as "hard" abstract.  Not for everyone.

Much of my work seems to appeal to artists rather than collectors, and I'm fine with that.  I'm not painting for the money.  Most of us aren't as the market is oversaturated with amazing talent.  Ours is a labor of love, without the labor, as I never feel anything but joy when painting.  If anyone decides it's worth their hard earned money to display it in their environment, all the better.
